TOC Business Transformation at Jindal Steel & Power | TOCICO YouTube channel

This case study shows the focus, alignment and speed of applying TOC. Declining global steel prices combined with policy changes in India resulted in a challenging 2015 for Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL). Management concluded that increasing sales alone was not the solution—operational cash flow had to be improved as well. This is the story of JSPL’s TOC journey to increased cash flow through improved gross contribution and reduction in working capital.

The Mindset—Policy vs Operations

There are four operational principles governments should apply to improve their performance.

Principle One : Think Like a Firefighter, Build in Buffer Capacity

Firefighters have a lot to teach us about how to plan for unforeseen spikes in our work. For instance, firefighters do not actually fight fires every minute of every shift—in other words, they do not “keep busy.” Rather, we pay them to be available and ready to go as soon as a fire starts. We should have roles just like that.

Principle Two : Get to the Fire Quickly, Speed is a Big Part of the Solution

Principle Three : Bring Enough Water to Put Out the Fire, The Significant Role of Dosage

Principle Four : We Need Signals to Tell Us When to Act, Not Just Reports that Tell Us How We Did

Conclusion

We can create innovative, powerful solutions when we apply this sequence of simple-yet-profound principles: Look for the areas in our operation where we need to have a “firefighter” mindset to build buffer capacity proactively ; Work on how quickly we can “get to the fire” and respond to the needs of our customers ; When we arrive, make sure we’re prepared with enough dosage to “put out the fire” and produce the results our customers are counting on ; Ensure we’re looking forward to the road ahead, not fixated on the rearview mirror—especially when we have our foot on the gas. In other words, build clear signals into systems that tell us when to take action, not just rely on lag measures.

Philip Marris's insight:

We don't usually publish posts dealing with current affairs. This exception is because it is essentially a TOC thinking based article written by THE leading expert in TOC applied to governments and administration: Kris / Kristen Cox.

[…] "The Evaporating Cloud Tool is a Discovery Tool. In the process of writing them, we DISCOVER new things. Beginners have to start on the Simple conflicts (even trivial). It's because they are not used to discovering new knowledge. And, verbalization can be very difficult when it is new to them.
[…] Harder Conflicts […] the harder clouds should be the main focus of the "A Cloud-a-Day" website. […] Tough Clouds, Chronic Conflicts. Now some comments on the whole Evaporating Cloud issue. Discovery is tough. Two people discover different things. […] Often a person will have trouble breaking their own cloud because they are too close to the issue. […] This introduces the problems with Negative Branch Reservations [NBRs] that an individual has. […] To solve VERY TOUGH clouds people need to understand NBRs. Enclosed is another EM 526 PowerPoint lecture Help with the Negative Branch Reservation Tool […]. This presentation gives four ways to achieve a breakthrough even though it appears blocked. The NBR is the key tool to do it. […] Considering VERY TOUGH clouds, one MUST address chronic conflict. […] The only solution is the Chronic Conflict Solution."
