This article provides a technical overview for how to create an interactive PPT and considers concepts such as 'Cognitive Load Theory' to justify suggested steps. Ensuring your presentations aren't overwhelming is important; I discussed treading the fine line between functionality and engagement in my blog here: https://diglatcqu.blogspot.com/2019/04/embedded-task-3.html

5 Creative Uses Of PowerPoint Presentations
Karen Ford's curator insight,
November 4, 2013 12:53 PM
I think "death by PowerPoint" is used so often because so many users have not "taken the pains to make a memorable..." presentation and the concept of creativity might not have even been considered. Not totally sure what the answer is, but I do believe that if more individuals could have their eyes opened to the potential that PowerPoint has, we might be able to get passed the "death" issue. That means we have to get the great ideas to the teachers and their students... not just telling them, but perhaps showing them...

PPT is here to stay. We should learn all of its features and be imaginative in how we use it.

My favorite quote here is' I provide the tools, its up to you what you do with them'. This video certainly had me rethinking PowerPoint. Clearly I need to learn to use it better. This was a very skillful presentation that was created only using PowerPoint.

I agree the article raises some valid points and those are true no matter what software (or even manual flip charts etc) you use. There is more to giving an effective presentation than starting up PowerPoint (or any software) and it is really up to the presenter to ensure he/she captures the audience....

If you are one of those people who still "tolerate" PowerPoint or Flash, you should read this post about using Powerbullet Presenter which helps to create animations for your presentations. Download the free tool from http://www.powerbullet.com/download.php

A cautionary note on special effects in PowerPoint: special effects, including music and videos, in a PowerPoint presentation can add energy BUT if not used well, they can be distracting, or worse, appear unprofessional and immature. When my daughters first started using PPT in middle school, their reports were full of figures dashing in with screeching sounds and words appearing with flashing lights and drum rolls. I have seen far too many 'grown-ups' add those and a myriad of other special effects as if they were the cure to death by PPT. (They aren't.) You may have heard the term 'font abuse' that comes from having so many choices and results in a sense of exploration and new found font freedom that drives restraint out the window. Don't fall prey to 'special effect abuse' in your enthusiasm. Some good rules to follow: 1) Draft your ENTIRE presentation before you even put it in PPT. 2) Use special effects ONLY when they reinforce your message, make your idea more understandable or facilitate the flow of the presentation. Remember that a presentation is for your audience, not to entertain yourself or demonstrate your special effects prowess.

While listening to the presenter's speech, the audience can interact by annotating, sharing, tweeting, saving the presentation in real time. To engage your audience, all you need is to download a free Presenter app for PowerPoint. Vivapitch currently works on Android platform only.

Has prezi killed the Slide-star???
Elke Watson's comment,
May 19, 2013 5:26 PM
I was an early adopter of Prezi (I think), and am now starting to get a bit tired of the predictable jumping around. It's like cinnamon or something. A wonderful spice but in small doses and not every day! I found that I returned to PPT, using punchy images (thanks Common creative section on Flickr!!) and short / one-word statements. Very powerful
Joaquín Ballester's comment,
