Cultivating Reform and Revolution

Cultivating Reform and Revolution | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Mountains and rivers, skyscrapers and dams – the world is filled with objects and structures that appear sturdy. Glancing upwards at a skyscraper, or mountain, a person may know that these obelisks will not remain eternally unchanged, but in the moment of the glance we maintain a certain casual confidence that they are not about to crumble suddenly. Yet skyscrapers collapse, mountains erode, rivers run dry or change course, and dams crack under the pressure of the waters they hold. Even equipped with this knowledge it is still tempting to view such structures as enduringly solid. Perhaps the residents of Lisbon, in November of 1755, had a similar faith in the sturdiness of the city they had built, a faith that was shattered in an earthquake – and aftershocks – that demonstrated all too terribly the fragility at the core of all physical things.

Sign me up to Russell Brand's sharing revolution

Sign me up to Russell Brand's sharing revolution | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
The political conversation on sharing is growing by the day, sometimes from the unlikeliest of quarters. Take Russell Brand, for example, the comedian-cum-activist and revolutionary. It’s easy to dismiss Brand’s polysyllabic and self-referential meanderings, as do most of the establishment media in the USA and Britain, but this only serves to disregard his flashes of wisdom and the reasons for his popularity.

The Industrial Revolution 2.0 - PopMatters

The Industrial Revolution 2.0 - PopMatters | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Human societies change continually, but the changes tend to be slow and incremental. Genuinely revolutionary changes—sudden, radical breaks with the status quo—are rare in human history. Deeper changes, which dissolve and re-form the foundations of the status quo, are rarer still. The great shift from nomadism to village agriculture was one; the emergence of cities, and all they entail, was another. The late 18th century substitution of steam power for wind, water, and muscle—the trigger for the Industrial Revolution and the First Machine Age—was a third. We are living, economists Erik Brynjolffson and Andrew McAfee argue, on the verge of a fourth. The Second Machine Age is their book about it.
