The City as Commons: a Policy Reader, brings together 34 contributions and 31 authors exploring policies and strategies for creating cities as commons.
Ouishare's Benjamin and Francesca share how they use Loomio to collaborate as a large-scale international distributed community.
Decentralization simply means building mechanisms which allow for a group of peers to efficiently arrive at decisions without having to rely on fixed hierarchies, central coordination and single points of failure. From an excellent article on the “Mike Hearn” controversy in the promising magazine Backfeed, excerpted from Julian Feder: “Since Hearns post mid january, the …
This is excerpted from a book originally published 30 years ago, by Dieter Duhm, initiator of the Tamera community in Portugal. Dieter Duhm: “Democracy is a question neither of verbal commitment nor of the outer political form of a system. Rather it is a question mainly of the emotional state and structure of drives in …
The kibbutzim inspired by Gordon understood through practice that every community is the result of the development of interpersonal links between its members. Structural and hierarchy, they said, is nothing but a “mechanical” impression, with its own logic, which is apparently rational, but really alien.
An update from our friends at the unMonastery in Matera, Italy and, as you’ll soon see, beyond. Over the past 6 months the unMonastery has been going through a number of significant developments, explorations and experiments?—?these initiatives have had mixed results, some very successful and some borderline disastrous; the net effect has restricted our capacity …
“The veracity of (these claims) cannot of course be tested – but it conveniently allows for someone at the “highest” stage of consciousness to “understand” a lower level but not the other way around. (Or far worse, that anyone objecting to the theory is simply told they are operating from a lower level of consciousness, …
Workers Council DAOs - Decentralized Autonomous Workers Councils (DAWCs) are science fiction, but only just.
Just as I am mentioning in my talks and conversations that Enspiral.org (New Zealand and beyond), las indias (Spanish-speaking world), the Ethos Foundation (UK), and Sensorica are a new kind of guild for our age, Nathan Schneider produces a interesting article for the New Yorker on the very subject, describing the co-working collective Prime Produce …
Clear signs tell us that, today, organizations that embraced a post-industrial transformation and defeated the bureaucracy and rigidity of linear business models are the masters of the market. Excerpted from an excellent discussion of the implications of David Graeber’s new book, the Utopia of Rules, by Simone Cicero: (we recommend reading the whole essay!) ““Only” …
The P2P Foundation's Michel Bauwens shares his vision of a new type of Open Cooperativism for the P2P age.
“The cooperative movement and cooperative enterprises are in the midst of a revival, even as some of their long-standing entities are failing. This revival is part of an ebb and flow of cooperativism, that is strongly linked to the ebb and flow of the mainstream capitalist economy. After systemic crisis such as the one in 2008, many people look at alternatives.
“This article deals with the phenomenon of hackerspaces and sheds light on the relationship of their underlying values, organizational structures and productive processes to those of the online communities of Commons-based peer production projects. While hackerspaces adopt hybrid modes of governance, this article attempts to identify patterns, trends and theory that can frame their production and governance mechanisms. Using a diverse amount of literature and case studies, it is argued that, in many cases, hackerspaces exemplify several aspects of peer production projects’ principles and governance mechanisms.”

On the convergence of the blockchain and the commons, with the blockchain as the new institutional technology that makes the commons scale.
Benjamin and Francesca share how they collaborate as a large-scale international distributed community. (The conversation was conducted by Alanna Krause in the context of an investigation of how organizations use Loomio.) Watch the video here:
Gail Tverberg in her post “2016: Oil Limits and the End of the Debt Supercycle” concludes that we’re now on the end of a debt supercycle. Because debt is different this time, it’s very unlikely that we can enter a new supercycle. This has to do with the fact that we live in a finite …
What we need are Technologies of Organizational Communion (TOCs) to serve as evolutionary guidance systems for the Technologies of Information and Communication (TICs – aka ICTs) that now stand the chance of connecting us not only with each other, but with the planet, with future generations, and most importantly, with ourselves. * Article: Alexander Laszlo, …
‘Scaffolding For A Sustainable P2P Humanity‘ by Nicolas Stampf is a work-in-progress collaborative book on gitbook dealing with the application of systems thinking (VSM etc) to P2P infrastructures. It is fairly general at this point, e.g.: ‘using systems thinking to architect a strength-based systemic global P2P organization aimed at identifying, interconnecting, amplifying and refracting successful …
The city as a commons is a claim on the city by the people that calls for us to rethink how cities are governed and resources allocated and by whom.
Lawrence Qholloi presents an important project in the context of a biomimicry design award: This project is “an open source software design to the Biomimicry Global Food Systems Design Challenge and we made it to the finals. Even though it is a food systems challenge, the design is applicable to any kind of commons based …
“Workers’ Councils are a Liberatarian Socialist system of organization. Rather than implementing Soviet-style centralized command economies, workers councils are decentralized and democratic. Workers in a particular workplace decide what their objectives are then appoint temporary (and instantly revocable) delegates to be responsible for them. Workplaces appoint representatives to local councils, local councils appoint representatives to regional councils, and so on, always temporarily and revocably. It is a system of face to face socialisation and political representation rather than top-down control.
The City of Bologna is pioneering a new paradigm of municipal governance that suggests that there are some practical, bottom-up alternatives to bureaucracy.
Excerpted from Rachel Schraer: “A group of social workers has requested to split off from their council and form a mutually-led social work practice, in order to put more focus on early intervention. The Calderdale social workers, many of whom were newly qualified, asked to be allowed to set up a practice outside of the …

Throughout the twentieth century, nation states cooperated to build global institutions to facilitate joint action and address global problems. Many of these organizations were created in the aftermath of WW II. In 1944, 44 Allied nations gathered in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, to develop a series of commercial and financial relationships for the industrial world.
