Life-Long-Learners: Dan Pink Recommends a ‘FedEx day’ for Students and Teachers

Life-Long-Learners: Dan Pink Recommends a ‘FedEx day’ for Students and Teachers | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
I was immediately intrigued by the learning opportunities that FedEx projects might provide in the educational sector. My son, who is currently in Silicon Valley, has indicated that many of the powerful technology-based companies like Google also utilize this “free-time” exploration concept. For example, Google allows employees to spend one day each week to focus on projects important to the individual employee. Interestingly enough, 50% of Google’s products, including Gmail, originated from the 20% time allocation for employees’ “personal passion projects”.

Mobile Perspectives: On teaching Mobile Literacy

Mobile Perspectives: On teaching Mobile Literacy | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
In the book Smart Mobs, Howard Rheingold argues: "The mobile internet . . . will not be just a way to do old things while moving. It will be a way to do things that couldn't be done before." Sony Sets Its Sights on Augmented Reality

Sony Sets Its Sights on Augmented Reality | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
The future of mobile gaming will merge the virtual and real worlds. Augmented reality involves mapping virtual objects onto a view of the real world, usually as seen through the screen of a smart phone. The technology has so far been used to create a handful of dazzling smart-phone apps, but has yet to take off in a big way. However, many believe that mobile gaming could prove to be an ideal platform for the technology. With Smart AR, certain real-world objects could become part of a game when viewed through a device such as the PlayStation Portable. This could allow game characters to appear on a tabletop, perhaps, or to respond to the movement of real objects.

Digitizing an Elementary Writing Portfolio « Moving at the Speed of Creativity | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Sarah can read very expressively, and it was not only fun to review her writing progress over the years tonight, but also remember together many of the things that have happened since we moved to Oklahoma from Texas five years ago. Without a doubt the most touching essay Sarah read tonight was "Yellow Cards." It made us both cry. In it, she recounts a story about Kent Wilson, who was a member of our church and Sunday School teacher who was very dear to Sarah. It is precious to have this story recorded in her voice, at age 10.

Despite Blocked Sites, Digital Media to Play Major Role in Opening China | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Some Chinese versions have an advantage over their American counterparts. Sina's Weibo has a Twitter-like format with the same 140-character limit on content. But Chinese characters pack far more meaning into the space than the Roman alphabet, which means that short articles can be posted in their entirety, without resorting to bit.ly links.

Trying to remember something? Put down the iPad, pick up a newspaper | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
The Kindle might be outselling good-old-fashioned books over at Amazon, but that doesn’t mean e-reading has all the advantages. A study from digital research firm Miratech reveals that iPad readers are less likely to retain information than those reading from newspapers. “We asked a representative sample of participants to read similar information from a printed newspaper first, and then from its iPad version,” the study explains.

Meet Sal Khan: the Seinfeld of the Education Revolution | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Here’s how it works: Students watch the videos in class (all of them produced by him), take “gamified” assessments that determine whether they understand the concept, and move on to the next level when they’re ready. The teacher can monitor each student’s progress with a dashboard: the green bar shows they’re proficient, blue indicates they’re working on it, and red alerts teachers that students are stuck on a problem.

In Search of Future-Focused Learning Technologies | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Over thirty years ago, Alvin Toffler pointed out: "All education springs from some image of the future. If the image of the future held by society is grossly inaccurate, its education system will betray its youth."1 Indeed, because we live in this fast-paced, interconnected, and complex world, the need to frequently revisit education's role and effectiveness in preparing people to be ready for the future is clear.

Learning with 'e's: One step beyond

Learning with 'e's: One step beyond | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
Earlier today on Twitter I said: 'To use any social media to its full potential in education you must venture beyond the classroom.' And I meant it. E-journals: their use, value and impact [final report]

E-journals: their use, value and impact [final report] | Learning & Technology News | Scoop.it
This report is the second arising from a two-year project funded by the Research Information Network to describe and assess patterns of the use, value and impact of e-journals by researchers in universities and research institutes in the UK. Publishers began to provide online access to articles in scholarly journals just over a decade ago. Numerous studies have shown how much researchers have welcomed enhanced and easy access to unprecedented numbers of journals. But until recently there has been little detailed evidence about how researchers have changed their behaviours in response to this revolution in access, about how they make use of online journals, or about the benefits that flow from that use. This two-year-long study begins to fill that gap.
